Examining consanguinity is the subject of my latest podcast.

Consanguinity (relations with blood relatives) is something which has been vilified for centuries. First by the churches, then by governments. It continues to be practiced in some degree or another world wide, with an estimated 10 percent of the population being considered of consanguineous origins. What constitutes consanguinity for most studies ( and there are relatively few) is couple bonding between cousins.

In the more isolated communities where this is commonplace, it can be expected that there would be significant generational overlap over time, if not for some significant influx of outsiders into the community. Yet, no one seems to have extensively documented how interrelated communities are, by going back 3 or 4 generations. That, combined with lack of resources and education, make comparing the health index of these communities to those in urban centers with access to health care, at best misleading.

Yet, research is rarely funded these days if it doesn’t support the common narrative or some agenda. We know, from old church records that the upper class, have enjoyed liberal exemption for consanguinity, since the church began condemning it’s practice, by purchasing their dispensation to marry. We also have a general lack of records, particularly in light of relative legality of such unions.

Examining Consanguinity is difficult, at best

Where consanguinity involves closer than cousins, documents are left blank or falsified to avoid penalty, so the true frequency of such unions is unknown. When it comes right down to it, Incest is illegal because most people believe that it’s practice would lead to a greater risk of birth defects and the moral majority does not see fit to allow that to happen. In reality, even with only isolated studies, the risk is estimated to be in the 3 percent range, similar to that experienced by a woman over 40 having children. Since we actually help older women conceive, in spite of nature making it more difficult, it is time that society rethinks their stand against consenting incestuous relationships. Because, if they choose to have children, there is little actual evidence that society or the child will be hurt by such an act.
