Societal prejudice and hypocrisy spurred these reflections from the coffee shop. Today’s letter comes from a 40-year-old woman’s distracting observations from the solace of her tranquil coffee break. As her gaze drifted out the window, to enjoy the brightly lit day, her view was absconded by a parking lot full of visibly unhealthy people. Obesity, poor posture, and the lethargy of a sedentary existence stood out in contrast to her own well-being. She couldn’t help but feel a sense of irony; these individuals now protected by society, were in fact contributors to a epidemic that other wise negated her very existence. She herself carried a secret that could easily shift her status from observer to outcast.

Her mind wandered to the hypocrisy that permeated mainstream society. It was a society that prided itself on health and wellness yet often overlooked the complex reasons behind individuals’ struggles. She had spent years studying human behavior and social systems at university, earning her degree with honors. Yet, despite her education and good health, she felt the weight of potential judgment looming over her. If her secret were known—that she had been conceived under circumstances deemed “undesirable”—the very labels she observed being placed on others would soon attach themselves to her.

In a world where labels like “mentally deficient” and “financial drain” were tossed around carelessly, she realized how fragile her position was. Though she was a successful professional, capable of contributing meaningfully to society, the stigma associated with her conception could eclipse her achievements. The irony of her situation stung; she was acutely aware of the dangers of superficial judgments, having witnessed how society often ostracized those who deviated from the norm.

So she put the onus of responsibility on everyone to take charge of themselves and teach their children, for generational benefits and real societal progress..
